How to Clean a Brick Fireplace

How to Clean a Brick Fireplace

Want a clean, beautiful brick fireplace without spending hours scrubbing? Here’s exactly how to clean fireplace brick the right way—fast, safe, and effective!

Step 1: Gather Your Cleaning Supplies

Before you start, grab these essentials:

Mini-broom & dustpan – Sweep up ash and debris.
Vacuum (Shop-Vac or hose attachment) – Sucks up fine dust.
Spray bottle – For pre-wetting and applying cleaning solution.
Masonry sponge or scrub brush – Scrubs away soot & grime.
Bucket – Mix your cleaning solution.
Gloves & safety goggles – Protects skin and eyes.

Step 2: Pre-Wet the Brick (CRUCIAL!)

🚨 DO NOT skip this step! Brick is porous—if you apply cleaner directly, it soaks in and may stain the brick.
Spray down the brick with water before adding any cleaning solution.

Step 3: Choose the Right Cleaning Solution

Start mild and work up if needed. Try these from gentlest to strongest:

1️⃣ Warm water & cream of tartar – Good for light stains.
2️⃣ Vinegar & water (1:1 mix) – A natural degreaser.
3️⃣ Dish soap & baking soda paste – Works on mild soot stains.
4️⃣ Dish soap & salt scrub – A slightly more abrasive option.
5️⃣ Quick N Brite Fireplace Cleaner – Designed for fireplaces.
6️⃣ Boric acid & water – Cuts through stubborn stains.
7️⃣ Foaming bathroom cleaner – Dissolves deep grime.
8️⃣ Ammonia & dish soap (diluted) – For heavy buildup.
9️⃣ Trisodium Phosphate (TSP) & water – The strongest option. Follow local disposal guidelines.

Step 4: Scrub & Wipe the Brick

✅ Start at the top and work downward to prevent streaking.
✅ Use a sponge or scrub brush soaked in the cleaning solution.
✅ Change the solution often—dirty water = dirty brick!

Step 5: Rinse the Brick (SUPER IMPORTANT!)

Once you’re satisfied, rinse with clean, warm water to remove leftover cleaner.

❌ DO NOT let cleaner dry on the brick—it can leave residue or damage the surface.

Bonus: Cleaning the Inside of the Fireplace

The firebox gets the dirtiest. Use the same method but expect to scrub harder!

Pro Tip: If the inside of the fireplace has thick soot buildup, use a commercial fireplace cleaner or TSP for deep cleaning.

Safety Tips

✅ Test a small hidden area before cleaning the entire fireplace.
✅ Ventilate the room—some cleaners produce fumes.
✅ Install or check your smoke & carbon monoxide detector for safety.
